How did it ever become normal for an obscenely wealthy monarch in a massive palace to pontificate about poverty in a Christmas speech? Why aren't more people saying, "This is fucking ridiculous"?

There's never been a point in British history where an obscenely wealthy monarch wasn't normal and people didn't die from being eaten inside out by parasitic worms.
There's a number of different things you could interpret from that.
The replies on here are so depressing. I don't know the King, but I'm open to the idea that he can care about poverty and want to do something about it, and be a monarch at the same time. The two aren't mutually incompatible.

He's using his position to draw attention to the crisis of poverty which has been created and perpetuated by a succession of governments. It's not incompatible to be wealthy and compassionate.
