Umbrellas are stupid. They don't work in crowds, they constantly break, and they threaten the eyeballs of people of above average height. Wear a hood or a hat. Worst case, it's just water, it washes off.

100%. When I eventually braved the "milady" jokes and bought a fedora I've never looked back. Keeps me dry, keeps my head warm, makes me feel like Bogart.
Round round my way you never get rain without wind so it's pointless having an umbrella unless you want to walk around with a satellite dish full of water. I favour the diving helmet.
It's just water. It is cold and penetrates your clothes if not waterproofed. It forms drops all over your glasses making you purblind.
Yes, if you are prepared with a waterproof coat and a broad brimmed hat, it doesn't matter. But it is easier to keep a small umbrella in the car than a coat and hat
summer/spring coats tend to be water resistant (lighter material & cheaper) whilst autumn/winter coats tend to be waterproof..A water resistant coat is not really likely to keep you dry in January rain.
If you live in the UK, why DON'T you have a waterproof coat with a hood? You already know it rains here (a lot). Most umbrellas are fucking useless, except in the lightest of windless showers.

I don't think you can teach spatial awareness.
