I have long maintained that the “don’t sell out not caring is cool caring is cringe” thing was bound to turn evil, this is not unrelated to the fact that I hate the movie American Beauty

I was born two to three years after the Gen X cutoff and it's amazing how different my cultural experience was. I know that a lot of it is family-specific but the culture I grew up with seems to have shaped me to be very pro-earnestness, authenticity, and enthusiastic about stuff.
American Beauty was tonally off because as written every character is intended to be a way of being a terrible person, with Kevin Spacey's character becoming juvenile in a mid-life crisis, but the film also decides to treat him heroically because it doesn't quite like its script.
