Airlines in the United States are now required to give passengers cash refunds if their flight is significantly delayed or canceled, even if that person does not explicitly ask for a refund. https://cnn.it/3NGS0lE

Is this where the general public will finally learn about the implications and outcomes of the Chevron decision? I'll bet the airline industry files suit to reverse this.
The airlines have found a workaround this, however. All they have to claim is that a delay or cancellation was “unavoidable” and they can weasel out of paying. JetBlue did this in August when they cancelled scores of flights without explanation all over the country. DOT needs to fix/enforce this
Lmao, does it really make up for the department of transportation contaminating an entire city with dangerous chemicals?
Congrats, Biden. One (1/uno) campaign promise fulfilled. Out of over 100.
While this is good it's also notable that as usual anything that negatively impacts people in congress (who have to fly freqently) gets fixed while other issues continue to get ignored.
It is baffling to me that this wasn’t already a thing. I’ve said for years that if we had a legit rail system I’d rather take a train than deal with the airline bullshit.
I wonder about the unintended consequences of this though. Will airlines ignore safety checks or maintenance issues in order to avoid having to repay customers?
No, the law is very strict on what they do in relation to that. Plus in Europe we’ve had this for ages and the effect was planes got a lot more punctual.

it's probably the "without asking" part that is major here. I am sure there was some level of refund policy but anyone dealing with a situation live has no braincells to pursue it if they didn't explicitly know about it.
And the voucher always expired in a year, at least in every case that happened to me. Like, no, there’s not going to be another eclipse in the next year. Or, my sister isn’t going to get married again. Or my mom isn’t going to die a second time.
Well the vouchers frequently had expiration dates and other limits, and forced you to use that airline to redeem them. So they did have a kick rocks element to them.
God’s got nothing to do with it. It’s the Biden administration. When the prez surrounds himself with cabinet members like Buttigieg, this is the direction things move!

I thought they were keeping the money and telling them to kick rocks
what the hell, US?
Seriously airlines are lucky we don't nationalize them. They don't even pay the flight attendants till the plane is off the ground.
