I am fed up with fictional characters who are "almost sixty, [but] his posture was still erect and his stride still vigorous and graceful" or "on the downside of sixty, ... [her] skin lined like the joints of an aged leather garment."

As I get close enough to know plenty of 60 year olds who are still running circles around most 30-something authors of fantasy/sci-fi novels, it is tiresome.
However I think there has been a huge shift between generations. My mum turns 80 next year (shhh, don’t tell!) but she looks nothing like as old as her mother did at that age. I suspect that your average 60yr old similarly looks much younger than their parents did at the same.
Also if the fantasy novels are set in pre-industrial times, the chances are folk would age more sooner. But when authors writing contemporary literature say things like that there is no excuse!
