MSNBC fires all these people including Joy Reid song from the 1980’s came to mind. And it was played at the end of the Apple TV show “Severance” a fee weeks ago. It’s in the Zeitgeist
Keith Olbermann said most news people are salespeople.
Yes but was also the time of Reagan and Thatcher. I wonder if we should have pushed back more. It was the start of excessive materialism and borrowing…at the end East and West Germany united in 1990 and as tomorrow’s elections will be huge in Europe I wonder how much Musk has meddled in them…
For a lot of us, the 70s was sort of the springboard. Born in ‘71, I always think of Bowling Alleys, Juke Boxes, Roller Skating, Pinball and Disco on the radio. Singing Leroy Brown in the back of the station wagon while using our luggage as drums.
This is gold. Many things to be reminded of, many people who maybe made it a bit easier for those that came along. If we forget what we experienced or choose to ‘forget’ the tricky/uncomfortable stuff, we will not learn.
At 17 I was listening to Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr speak to our group of volunteers. I had no idea who he was. Jackie Kennedy set up the gathering for us. He gave us perspective. We would make a difference standing up for the poor and for education, for women’s rights. It kept us moving forward.
Yeah, kind of wishing my son who’s 18 and a senior could experience what I did graduating in 1989. Unfortunately, society in general has let our kids down.
Well, isn't that good for YOU! You've got an income, you've got connections. I'm a 77 year old woman all alone who wakes every morning worrying my next SMALL social security check might be in President Musk's pocket instead of in mine! So excuse me, but I could care less about your fucking peace!
Everything that made this 80's child from the dreary East Midlands of England think the USA was the greatest country on earth is right here. It's too bad we had to grow up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0eflYLkI4A
You know, I wanted to articulate ( as a brit ) how I adored America at this time, but I felt it sounded shallow referencing John Hughes, the music Reagan, ET, etc. I travelled coast to coast in the 90s with my mate in a van. Every house with a Stars and Stripes, we so badly wanted to be American.
Did anyone notice that apparently there was only one minority in an 80s movie?
If you blink at the wrong time during this montage, you'll miss Eddie Murphy.
Whoopie, Denzel, Richard, Spike, Lou Diamond, Edward James, Cheech and more made movies too.
I didn't find peace. Only exclusion.
While I don’t think he noticed that before posting the video, I kinda want to say that’s a point you are making as well, him not noticing it, is as troubling as the video’s lack of representation to begin with.
He's a marketing professor from one of America's most prestigious institutions in one of the most diverse cities in the world.
How does one NOT notice a lack of representation?
14% of the country identifies as black.
But that video gave a fraction of a second of representation.
That's privilege!
Agreed. Not noticing or ever having to be made aware that representation exists is precisely that. What he chooses to do after being informed also says a lot.
😉
I'm only a small voice in the wilderness. He may not hear me. If he doesn't hear me, maybe my voice amplified will make a difference.
Then, we'll see what happens.
So far, a dozen or so have heard me. There's hope that they'll help my voice get stronger.
A NYU Marketing Professor posts this unironically. I guess we are like the magats to Trump. Only useful when election time rolls around.

48 hours-$225M
Almost $7B for all 45 of his movies.
And that's just Eddie. Denzel -$4B
Y'all need to stop excluding us.
FFS folks: people of my age were so unaware in the 1980s. It does not mean we are unaware now. This vid is a depiction of how the world was back then. It doesn't mean that's what we think now.Sometimes the woke community fails to recognise allies because of idealogical puritanism.
I appreciate your opinion. It has absolutely nothing to do with my observation, but it's still appreciated.
That video was not made in the 80s. It was not posted in the 80s.

I'm not cancelling anyone. I'm calling out a common blind spot.
Just binged my new wave play lost on the road trip home tonight…the likes of Psychedelic Furs, Chameleons, Thompson Twins, Duran Duran, Roxy Music, The Church, Culture Club, The Fixx, Go Goes, The bangles….so much great music and a plethora of genres to choose from…
Just a Bay Area girl who grew up in the 80's drinking Bartles and James and listening to Journey. (ok, well more like Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, but you get the gist) 😉
The decade of the 1980s was dominated by two terms of the Reagan Admin, the worst POTUS in U.S. history until tRump came along and embarked on his campaign to destroy country.
You don’t know how right you are. Look into the creation of Fox News and Murdoch getting fast tracked immigration by Reagan. Ronald knew the power of tv and propaganda…he helped accelerate Fox News. Then killed the fairness doctrine. It’s been a concerted malicious and devious plan for decades.
Rupert Murdoch is one of the first of many undesirable immigrants who have entered the U.S., taken up residence, and proceeded to do everything in their power to destroy the country.
Elon the Muskrat is only the latest, along with Peter Thiel, Ted Cruz, etc. The list of "undesirables" is long!
I mean…nostalgia and a damn fine montage, and a load of iconic moments. Film was inventive in that period. But also so little diversity, so much misogyny and violence, and so many problematic narratives. Rough and smooth in equal measure.
Although I grew up in Europe, I breathed in the values from Hollywood. And for the most part, they were good. There was honour, striving for truth and standing up for the weak. Where have these values gone?
Yeah, and it’s part of what threatened tightass conservatives. But it was the 60s and 70s that got them started on their plan to invade our country with their judgmental insanity.
Fact, not fiction.
I heard it.
My nabe was filled with the Christian Reformed Church and their addiction to hate.
For all the probs of the 80s I am forever grateful I got to grow up through them. And then come of age in the 90s. Go to college and start my career in the 00s... Just to watch the world crumble in the 20s. But hopefully I can spend my twilight help rebuild what we've lost and may still lose.
At this point… Reminiscing about the 80s… Is the equivalent of growing up in the 80s and listening to my grandfather reminisce about how great the 40s were

And, also, this kind of cancel attitude is exactly the stuff that gives the #MAGA crowd a stick to beat liberals with.
Irony and humour are not dead, I hope. But some of the responses to the Prof's post make me fear they are on the wane.
