Once again, the reason for autism saw a spike in diagnoses between the 1980s and now is that autism did not have a separate diagnosis from schizophrenia in the DSM until 1980. Asperger's Syndrome was not in the DSM until 1994. ASD didn't get included until 2013.

Yuuuuuuup! I was misdiagnosed with only ADD in 1993 because ADHD/ASD dual diagnosis wasn't possible at the time (DSM issues). And that's before you get into the part where my parents and school didn't even want to accept the diagnosis because my grades were 'too good' for alternative course work.

Again, another reason for this is that the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act required "child count" data, which reports schools to report how many students with disabilities, including autism, they serve. (Trump wants to get rid of the Department of Ed)

As far as the claim that "Autism spectrum disorders had the highest prevalence in high-income countries." But have been fewer epidemiological studies in low income countries and "no significant epidemiological study has been conducted in Africa."

Poorer countries do not have the funds (and let’s be real- the interest from outsiders who do have funds) to research, diagnose, and/or support Autistic kids. Definitely not to support the needs of a lot of Autistic adults. There is a LOT of work, education, *dedication* required.

My family was pretty lucky. We were able to get most services from pretty early on.Although, some we didn't know about til later, & had to fight for. We always had someone working w/ us, thank god. Watching other parents in the same community struggle to get the same services was pretty shocking

On top of that, new data from 2023 showed that autism was more detected in Black, Hispanic, and Asian or Pacific Islander children compared to white children. Prior to that, it was seen more in white kids. This is a sign of progress. The racial diagnosis gap is closing.

The gender gap also narrowed significantly over the years. In 2018, the CDC said autism "4.2 times as prevalent among boys as among girls." In 2020, that number went down to 3.8. This is a good thing.
