As good as it gets! All time favorite watched every time it snows. An interview from 60s Nyby said this was Hawks' direction. Who else does a shot with 23 people in it? The lively banter like real people talking is all Hawks; even the capable Nikki is his trademark. And Arness in 2 of the very best!

It is indeed. Campbell had a Science Fiction radio show titled Exploring Tomorrow, and it was pretty good but was short lived. He introduced each episode. There are some movies that are indeed perfect and this is one. Hawks and Ben Hecht really nailed this this one. Here's a funny "Thing" story...

Talking with art dealer Harry Wallace who had worked for WB I ask how he got involved in film. "My father composed and played in Dimitri Tiomkin's orchestra." Wow! What did he compose? "Nothing you'd know. A trombone overture for a movie called The Thing." I hum the opening measure.

I'm still amazed that they pulled this off. I mean, damn, there was fire everywhere in that sequence! Could have went really bad. And just how can you rehearse a scene like this?

Exactly! The set basically became engulfed in flames. And, yeah, it would have been impossible to predict where that fire was going to spread, so there's no way to rehearse and make sure everyone would be safe. Just pure luck that everyone was ok.

Hollywood was doing full body burns for a while when this movie came out. Not to say it is not dangerous, but the stuntguy got a large chunk of change for doing it.

It's not so much the full-body burn, but the way the fire spreads on the set that freaks me out. If things had gone wrong, many people would have died, not just the stuntman.

The short lived adult comic "1984" did a rather good parody of the film. At the end, after the alien is defeated, the captain gets a call about a monster in Japan. The captain, his girl friend, the reporter and the crew fly off to battle Godzilla! Too bad the series was not continued.

Read an interview from Hawks one time where he said he bought the rights just for the bit of the saucer in the ice. Threw the rest away.

But it did have the creepiest opening logo. That is a classic!

My personal all-time favorite movie. I saw it with a crowd at proctors theater Schenectady a number of years ago. I think a lot of people came to laugh at the old 50 science fiction film. But they became utterly engrossed and when that scene with the jumpscare came on. It still worked beautifully
