I was lucky in that I spoke directly with numerous folk who both fought in WWII, as well as Holocaust survivors and resistance folk. For me, that conflict was not some period of history. It was the war both my grandfathers fought in.

That could be the difference. Sadly, we do usually forget.

Yes, there's a personal element to our understanding. My parents were children in WW2 so it was often discussed when I was growing up. More recent generations don't have the same link - they're not hearing the personal experiences of parents and grandparents - so perhaps to them it is just history.

Yes grew up on war stories on Mum’s lap .. she worked in munitions, Dad evacuee at 12yrs gained another family, we went to all the weddings, school hols bro ‘n me went up by train, magical Spalding Lincs. Still have contact, mostly passed next gens live on.

I think the personal touch through family really helps solidify the realities of the war. Most kids who join far-right groups are a mix of hatred and self-hatred, with no understanding of the past. Doesn't forgive what they do. But helps us understand how to drag them out of such cults.

It was. My MIL raised 5 kids on her own & did it very tough. In her 40s secured a commission house which she then bought by saving hard. She was made redundant at 55 but luckily got a pension. Her last 25 years was lived in peace & security.Nowadays she’d be destitute. Australia has gone backwards.

It’s all gone too far now. Labor can never stay in government long enough to fix any of it. It looks like they will get turfed again because with a slim majority they couldn’t fix health, housing & education in 3 years. People will punish Labor & get more conservative inequality.
