You can get more nails in of you pre-drill holes about 1/16 undersize before driving the nails in. That will help relieve some of the stresses and make it less likely that the bat will split before you have enough nails in it.

I just still have my aluminum Little League bat. It’s the perfect length for uses other than baseball. (I last played Little League when Jimmy Carter was president.)
