Lori Chavez-DeRemer, a first-term Republican representative from Oregon who narrowly lost her House seat this month, was chosen to serve as labor secretary in the coming Trump administration.

Define that. Because she wants to slash benefits and wages. But she’ll probably band gays, so the hard hats like that. Is that what you define as success?
This my question on “the catch” I had never heard of her until NEA president issued a statement of the record of being those things. Anything trump touches has a catch to it and then dies! I’ll take your answer as the “catch”
So what I’m finding are groups like AFL-CIO and NEA, are acknowledging she has voted pro-workers at times, but because of who is pulling her strings, they are advising people to watch carefully. Well hell, we know what stupid thing she will end up doing if 🍑 has his say!
Randi Weingarten, President of the AFT, weighs in on Trump announcing that he intends to nominate Congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Secretary of Labor.
Conservatives have responded to the news with great frustration with some insisting that Senate Republicans must reject the nomination.
Thanks for digging in Paul. There’s definitely a catch. All these picks are being picked because they are loyal to Trump, not because they are qualified or deserve the post. In some cases, they are being picked to make those agencies weak and closer to failure—all to prop Trump up to the top.
Line the unions pockets w/money by forcing people into unions. Right now people have a CHOICE! The Pro Act wants to take away choice from 76 Million contractors & freelancers by reclassifying them as employees. Then they want to remove “Right to Work” laws that protect choice. Freelancers are pissed
Companies love the “choice”. Choice also means zero protections for workers. Gives companies the “choice” to blast workers with unregulated hours, shifts, safety etc etc. More things than just wages. Those companies love unprotected workers!
Not every unions entrance policies work the same & can lead to cronyism. The union I was associated w/ meant you had to work union jobs for 3yrs before official membership yet (IATSE 798). The only way to get those jobs w/o right to work was to know someone. Guess who they loved to keep off jobs?
I was the teachers union president for 6 years in my last district. I’m married to a rep for a local grocers union. We are a union family. I was president through Janus and it only made us stronger. But I understand some are questionable out there, and members don’t always jump in. I get it
76 Million ppul use that choice to remain flexible in the workforce. I’m sure it also benefits companies, but it saved me when I graduated college & couldn’t find a normal job. I was allowed to work both union AND non-union jobs in film & TV to survive. Without it, the union could’ve denied me work.
Unpopular opinion: Chavez-DeRemer is the most pro-labor GOP secretary since the Nixon administration. This pick with AG suggests that they have learned from. The first term. They are going to try to keep labor and farmers happy while they dismantle everything that supports labor and farmers.
When they deport, everybody that works on the farm and the farmers have nobody to work their farm they're not gonna be happy. He's honestly not trying to make anybody happy, but himself.
It appears that the GOP and MAGA base are the most angry about this pick. They might block her in the senate. She’s certainly an odd choice on the face of it.
I actually have an even less popular opinion, which is that the GOP might, just might, have a new and very real pull in the direction of labor within it, and that might, just might, yield some good things.
“Starve the beast” mentality in action after limiting and dismantling federal social services, education, and elimination of military bases & benefits. Stage six, put final nail in the coffin of labor unions, further enriching the top 1% eliminating a middle class, and increasing a serf class.
As a former member of 3 different unions, this doesn’t mean a dam thing. Project 2025 has no use for unions. Trump is will undo anything positive Biden had accomplished when it comes to unions and workers.
She supported the PRO Act. It helps erase Right to Work Laws across states and reclassifies 76 Million Americans who are contractors and freelancers as employees so they can join unions (who have historically low membership rates). Its cronyism. Union leaders care about money just like Trump.
🤣🤣🤣…It's like watching the stupid neighbor who, convinced by his arsonist brother-in-law that the best way to clean the house is napalm, finds his house on fire.
Wow, not a wildly unethical pick like Gaetz, but this has to be one of the most shamelessly cynical things I've ever seen, even from Republicans. Appointing someone who he thinks will seem pro-union, while he attacks their rights and safety, and erodes their income.
