The main issue with feeling shitty after drinking is that you went to sleep with a bunch of sedatives in your system and you didn't get any decent REM sleep so you're not rested. I didn't read the paywalled article but if the "experts" didn't mention upfront then their advice is seriously lacking.
I can back this up. In my 20s we had a work football (soccer) team that played on Saturday mornings.
Friday at 5pm most of the team was in the pub. And still there about 11pm.
Kick-off was noon.
We'd warm up feeling like death, but once the game started within 2 minutes the hangover was gone.
