In my life I have seen monarch butterflies go from being beautiful and abundant to beautiful and only seen in pictures and movies. Please help bring them back.
They also need a change in the name as that name might cause them to be pushed off and isolated by othet butterfly species who don't like it! What about 'Lady Butterfly'?? Sounds more Liberal and Democratic!
About time🦋. Here is a great documentary I helped produce about Monarch butterflies and what’s been going on. Check it out 👇 https://vimeo.com/262092224
Milkweed that is native to your area! I have multiple species in my yard, but only the native one is the ones where they are laying their eggs. Not all milkweed is the same.
This is so true! I would add a lot of people like the way tropical milkweed looks, but it can encourage monarchs to stop migrating because they think they’re already at their destination. My local conservation society gives out native milkweed seedlings, and I bet other places do too!
This is one area in which we can all do something to help. Milkweed is a ditch weed that grows easily. Find out which varieties are native in your area and plant some. Guerilla garden it if you don't have any land. Make sure to plant in areas that don't get sprayed. #nativeplants
My sister has bird feeders and her caterpillars never make it. But she’s in a place where the native milkweed seeds are on fluff, so we know it’s seeding itself all around the neighborhood.
I live in a town named for the Monarch butterflies (Papillion) and it's rare to see them anymore in the summertime. I used to see dozens every day in my yard... but this year I think maybe I saw two?
Do you have native milkweed? It’s SO FUN to have them set up shop and spend the summer. My sister has a lot of milkweed, but also bird feeders, so they tend to get eaten. I set up a container garden this year and had a small army of monarchs over several months.
I went to Mexico a couple of years ago to see the Monarch winter habitats, which was incredible! Unfortunately, out of the six parks where the monarchs gather, several were in cartel-controlled areas. Monarchs need to be protected on both sides of the border.
Until we enact more restrictions on pesticide use and return hundreds of millions of acres of farmland to native habitats this species is as good as gone.
With Doug Burgum nominated to lead the Department of Interior, I wait with dread as to who will get US Fisheries & Wildlife. Exploitation of resources and boosting corporate profits will be the priority whoever it is. A butterfly or any species survival is hardly likely to be on their agenda 😡
There are no butterflies in space or the whole universe- only on planet Earth. We are about to be led by a tech oligarchy that sees no value in a butterfly but value in space dirt on Mars. God Help Us All.
The need for this saddens me.
I hope this protection is granted.
I remember clouds of these butterflies from childhood and even in my own garden just a few years back.
I cheer on your conservation efforts! Beautiful! I do hope when you say you raise them you mean you have a butterfly garden, as hand-raised monarchs are not good for the wild population. I lost several caterpillars to tachinid flies, which is gruesome, but had a whole bunch of successful butterflies

None came to my patches last year. They visited and I saw eggs this year, but a predator must've gotten to them. Next year!
Sad really!
I hope this protection is granted.
