Delta Air Lines said it was offering $30,000 to each passenger aboard the flight from Minneapolis that crashed and flipped upside down this week while trying to land in Toronto.

Are people seriously grabbing the pitchforks without even reading the ingress? Delta is paying this out as an immediate compensation (as they are obliged to do), without restricting future claims. They're playing this by the book, and doing the right thing. Stop being angry about people doing right.
An interesting response. If people take it will they feel disinclined to join a lawsuit? I wonder if Delta knows something about the plane/flight crew/etc .. that would impact a lawsuit. As long as there wasn't a complex paperwork involved, I'd take it
Y'all saying it's not all saying it's not enough? It doesn't effect their ability to sue, which I am sure they will. People have access to $$ immediately instead of waiting on insurance. Delta never said this was the end of this put the pitchforks down.
I’d like to see the spreadsheet that came up with that number. What is the tipping point number that keeps a person quiet instead of suing for 10–100 times that number?
Don’t blame anyone for being skeptical of ANY corporate response to a disaster, but this was voluntary and unforced. I think it’s a pretty humane gesture on Delta’s part.
worst case scenario, if the airline passengers lost their lives it would have been another tactic for them to forget and start looking for BLACK BOX of the Airplane
The goal is always to prevent lawsuits. Lawsuits are expensive, can take years, and in many cases, most regular people are struggling to pay bills. $30k is a million when you're broke. It's unfortunate, but many of them will end up getting way more than that, as they should.
"We hope you enjoyed the new circus landing experience we offer on select Delta flights and, as our first guests to try the ride, we're offering a gratuity of $30k plus a free cocktail with the purchase of another on your next flight with us!"
This isn’t intended to replace a settlement, and Delta has said accepting it will not affect further compensation. I don’t even think this is an advance on future settlement, it’s just cash to deal with short term needs.
It may not come with a liability waiver or any sort of "strings attached" but it is absolutely Delta demonstrating to a future judge that they "tried to be reasonable and work with the plaintiff, who is obviously just out for a windfal.."
Not forcing a waiver makes Delta look even better.
In 2024, Delta Air Lines reported an operating revenue of $61.6 billion, a 6% increase from 2023, and an operating income of $6.0 billion, reflecting a 9% rise. They have deep pockets.

If that’s the case this is a decent thing to do.
