Just read the new Phil Gourmet Report. It is so bad on MA rankings that it is an actual injustice to applicants. It has completely left SFU out of any rankings. Just the US? Why? This one ranks us better but is based on some superproblematic methodology. He gives students who go to a PhD a score that is just the PhilGourmet ranking of the school they accepted. We have students get into a range programs and not always accept the top PG ranked one. And it this depends on PG

And: there is a path into academia for those of us not from academic backgrounds, who have to pay our own ways. SFU Philosophy dept has a funding floor: we commit to paying at least a certain amount every term. This means you can actually treat this as your work.

Non-US applicants: it is much more humane and straightforward to come to Canada than the US (even now, much less in a year or 2). This is a great place to do a first acculturation to English language instruction as well, if you have not had that yet, which makes it much easier later at PhD programs

US based applicants: consider Canada! I am often surprised at how little USians know about or even remember the existence of Canadian schools. We have great schools, better tuition, and lots of other perks

Can confirm. Parent of an American student who just graduated from a Canadian school & it was excellent &waaay more affordable than comparable US schools. I personally think Canada should pivot to focusing on US international students for many reasons -influence, revenue, cross-border relations, etc

American parents are already paying more for higher education & Canadian schools rank high globally. Current issues w international students wouldn't continue & Canada could help shape minds & build life-long business, political & interpersonal relationships with it's most important peer.

For me, I also loved not worrying about mass shootings, the overall safety of the country, secure rights & freedoms, healthcare costs being extremely low, amazing kind & helpful Canadians making her journey wonderful. Plus the exchange rate making it shockingly affordable in comparison.
