curious if they will req a prime subscription to read them? this is the reason i never buy books which are merchant dependent (nook, amazon, app-dependent). ive lost so many irreplaceable media this way. i only do what i can download and keep. i dont do amazon, btw. no $ for bezos the bootlicker.

If I can't find it in a library or bookstore it is just not worth reading. I have an old Kindle lifted to me. Have never used it. I have an old railroad tie with an iron spike. Tomorrow I plan to introduce spike to Kindle. Will post pic after.

My guess is that they want to be able to control your device. They don't care if you pirate books, or else they would have stopped scammers on KU. So, they want to control your device, just like Microsoft does now with Windows computers.

No, you paid for the number of licenses the DRM gives you, not the ability to put it anywhere, including piracy sites. Is it fair to me that one person in a book club buys it, unlocks the DRm the 9 other people get to read it without paying me for my work?

With all due respect, that’s how paper books work. That’s how library digital copies work too. People buy and lend books all the time. And the pushback is because Amazon is essentially saying that previous purchases can be removed from people’s digital shelves. No one was trying to share before this

I have worked with DRM since digitak music became a thing. it was theft then, too. I know exactly how DRM works and the push back is likely due authors screaming about their lax stance the issue, other than to punish the author when someone decides to break the drm & illegally puts it on the net.

I can sort of see your point, but I would argue that digital additions are easier to mass share. It’s one thing if you lend your book to a friend, it’s another if you upload it to one of the pirate sites and thousands of people benefit by it without paying anything, it cannibalizes ebook sales.

No, it isn't fair to the author, you are right there. But I want to read my book anywhere! Kindle currently allows me to do that, if it changes, its no use! Paperbacks end up in libraries, thrift stores and passed around friends... the author only gets one sale, so what's different (the price isnt)?

Let's see how long openaudible will allow us to strip DRM from audiobooks we own. Originally I learned how to do this because I wanted to use an MP3 player rather than a phone. Now I self-host my own library privately on Audiobookshelf and use tailscale to access it. :-)
