That's cause the folks harping about it are mostly non-artist capitalists. They really think generating virtual hobby lobby art is the future but all they see is potential for commodities 🤑 and not practical, real world value for culture-pushing art 😫

Agreed, there are so many AI coding tools that try to optimize out the human and constantly suggest changes, when in reality I've found most success using a "write this boilerplate for me" keybind and no other AI integration whatsoever

for me the most telling bit is companies like google and microsoft going 'we can't convince you to opt in and pay extra for this feature so we're going to force it on you and raise the cost of the service you were already paying for'

they just have zero creative vision for anything it could actually be used for. reminds me of how whenever mark zuckerberg talks about VR its always about its use cases for board meetings and virtual offices. Theres no creativity whatsoever there, these companies are boring to the core

It's even less-so that and more the, "what can we do with this tech that was already being done before but at 50% speed and at 50% lower quality for 400% the electricity" phase.

Like you'd think that alone would have been enough to put the tech back in the bottle for a couple more decades.

I still think there's a lot of cool potential with it its just tainted by the fact that the least creative trillion dollar companies on the planet want to control it, are seemingly completely unwilling to address the copyright issues, and want it all running as cloud service so they can earn money

Yeah it realty tainted a tech which had some interesting possibilities, but since tech companies had nothing better to do, they decided to make something somewhat useful in some cases the future of the internet.

Honestly, I don’t see any potential at all. Even if it weren’t a plagiarism machine that’s bad for the environment it just seems like a dull toy, not something I want to be surrounded by at all times.

the most interesting use case ive seen is the idea of it being used to realtime render games in higher fidelity for less processing power, e.g. the game is rendering colored polygons and the ai is adding an additional layer of "this color should look like grass blowing in the wind, etc"

We didn’t skip it, it was just so useless at the playing stage that it had not much use at all. Remember the early fun little visual tests you could do with ai image generation? It was already soulless and an interesting tool for tech art at best

I mean you're viewing it only as "offline asset creation" which *is* the least creative use case it has, image gen is still kind of whatever if integrated into real-time stuff, but theres a *lot* that LLMs can do that have nothing to do with 'generating text'

Hadn’t really thought about non-text/image generation options. Maybe I just haven’t been exposed to much interesting from that side of LLM, or at least something that actually seems “cool”

LLMs work sort of as "english as a programming language" and you can instruct it to respond in structured ways like json that can be parsed as something a game understands, if you had an embeddable model that runs in real time theres a *lot* you can do with that

At the point where AI became useful, it was already clear what horrors it might do, as it was fed by the hellscape that was the internet. Cant really expect the “fun tech demo” crowd to pick up such an eldritch horror of a technology and actually enjoy the process. It’s too easy, way too easy

The tech (without the data) and research are both freely available. I feel like any cool and creative new things that were possible have been (or would have been) done already. But it's like trying to do art with a jpeg decoder.
