Absolute skill issue. I'd respect them more for just saying "I don't want to draw this body type" than trying to make excuses for being exclusionary about it.
I want to learn to draw more people of different body types. I think that's something to be seriously admired! (*A*) I like to draw too, but I'm not very good and can only draw certain body types right now. That said, I'm fat too, and the fat-phobic shits can go fuck themselves.
Funny enough I used to think I couldn't really do it, and I still think I could do certain parts better, but overall I've gotten pretty good after talking with some cool folks the past few years!
It's so funny when I see artists who I would consider more technically skilled than I am saying they can't draw fat people... Um, I can and I'm not even that good at drawing!
Omfg the art style excuse. Almost as old as anthracite. Its 100% a skill issue. Shame upon you, your house and your cow if you make an excuse like this. Do better.
"I'd do it, but alas, my talent won't let me," has got to be one of the douchiest copouts ever... and today, I learned my phone knows that douchiest is a word.
I have a thin Canadian artist friend who illustrates plus size nudes. I thanked her because I’d never seen someone portray people like me with such beauty.
Someone drew one of my very-not-skinny characters and they removed basically all of her identifiable features besides her clothes, hair, and maybe 20lbs left over from the metaphorical liposuction they put her through, i wanted to complain real bad like but i didn't wanna come off as a dickhead
As an artist who does commissions I say if you’re paying you got a right to get what you want.
Especially if it’s an OC. I was told the first rule of comics and animation is don’t play with the style guide.

Could not be me. I was about to post a chubby chibi I did of all things. But thought I'd ask for consent first (Nothing is showing/NSFW I just don't wanna random advertise on a strangers post!)
I read for sure "I am fat-phobic and refuse to expand my range to accompany inclusivity because it makes me uncomfortable and I won't step out of my comfort zone"
I feel like falls into the comfort zone thing. I wouldn't approach this person directly with those words, but my thought process would likely be narrowing down why they limit their art style.
I think we all limit ourselves.
I do portraits. In oil. Alla prima. I’m not interested in doing most other stuff.
Maybe I should try some purely abstract works ? Or let it dry and try to get photorealistic ?
Fuck that.
Photorealisim is jizzless shit, maybe an abstract…
That is fair. It definitely depends on what genre of art you do for sure. I contextually assumed that the artist referred to in the post likely involves humans.
I used to be one of those people in middle school 😅 And then I worked on it, and I DID get better! It was awesome feeling so much less limited 😊 Wishing every artist the same capacity ✌️ Go out and draw some gorgeous fat people
isn’t it like easier to draw more shapely bodies??? idk but all cartoon characters with rounded bodies are soooo pleasing to draw & conceptualise because of them having some interesting shapes and curves… but I’m not an artist myself to prove if it’s a real thing among other artists
Ever since my classes in college drawing from models, I haven't been able to comfortably draw toothpick thin people. We had average people for models. The thinnest was a yoga instructor and she was sturdy and muscular. If someone has muscles (and I like drawing muscles), it adds BULK!
“Better” is highly subjective. I would just go up to Prof, go, “What the fuck do you have against fat people?” And then take picture of their pikachu face to sketch a satirical take. Post it on school channels with the offending feedback.
Oh it wasn't even a professor, it was randos at a convention. I had left some sketches out on my booth. They took one of my pencils and -drew on my damn sketches-.
I’m thick slim and would love to see more representation in art. Someone should give this artist a basic art history class. Specifically renaissance and mannerism era paintings.
To this day, I'm still disappointed that the author of the manga series "Arte" admitted that she knew that plus-sized bodies were seen as more desirable in 16th Century Florence, but chose to draw all of the women characters, including a courtesan, with typical slim body types found in most manga.
If this is you but you want to change and grow as an artist, there are good resources for models of any size in the first dozen or so replies. check them out!
Very much this. If an art style is so restrictive that it can't handle huge swaths of the population, then it's a bad art style and needs to be changed.
It’s not the art style. It’s the artist.
And the artist is probably happy to not push themselves.
Art schools tell people to be consistent so collectors know what to expect.
I think it’s stupid but I think a lot of what they teach in art school is stupid. But I think I’m just jealous
I’m starting to get back into my art, and I was never a huuuge body person. But I’m trying my best rn and I looooove my fat girls and I wanna draw someee. Tips ????
If you can spare a few bucks, the 'Morpho: fat and skin folds' book is amazing! It has a ton of examples to study from along with breakdowns of where fat connects to different parts of the body, etc. It was a lifesaver on a recent piece where my ref was like half the weight of my own character lol
my video artstyle is notably weaker and harder to do with skinny characters 😭 I developed my character rigs with my hefty avatar character in mind and every time I design a slim character I have to make compromises
OMG this! One of my fav comic characters ever was Cutter John, wheelchair user in the strip Bloom County. The artist wrote him out of the comic - "because it was too artistically challenging and "frustrating" to draw someone sitting down in every panel." So yep, small skilz can lose you fans and $.
I remember in art school, figure drawing was my best class. Of all the body styles of the models, imo, plus size women were the easiest to draw. Skinny men were the hardest.
Id say a little of both. It took a while for me to be able to draw anything other than anime thin without making them look like a balloon animal. But, the insecurity hinders people from wanting to work on the skills as well.
that goes with any art. it's also generally a good practice not to blame the artstyle for own perceived lack of skill. just say you [general you here] don't know how to do it and you'll be set on a way better path, instead of finding excuses.
I draw what I see then play with it a bit.
Maybe it’s different for those who construct the figure ?
I knew a comic artist years ago that constructed everything he drew. Maybe it’s hard to simulate the weight and saggyness? That’s probably why life drawing classes don’t use fashion models
An art style that simply "cannot" represent certain things, people or otherwise, is just bad design. Imagine imposing rules on yourself that restrict your growth as an artist for no reason.
IDK what people are expecting when they click to see art I specifically put behind a sexually suggestive content filter, and it’s weird how mad they’re getting about it, LMAO.

Be professional.
Like I'm sorry YOU can't draw chubby and fat people, BUT I CAN AND WILL, so. ✨
Especially if it’s an OC. I was told the first rule of comics and animation is don’t play with the style guide.
No one owes you accepting your commission, and theres no reason that needs to be given.

We stick to our little bubbles, improve! 🙏
I imagine whoever said this thought saying this was better than just saying they didn't want to draw it.
In attempt to not sound mean, they instead sound kinda stupid lol
Artists absolutely do not have to draw something if they don't want to, but be honest and just say that directly instead.
No need to make weird excuses.
It might be lack of experience and fear of failure.
You might be right but we’ll probably never know

"I'm still learning how to draw it in my art style" ✅
Just cuz you can't draw them yet doesn't mean you can never learn x]
Dear furries; not everyone wants to be a toothpick thin twink, thanks
No, this character is fat, feck off!
I’m not fat. I’m a piece of art. 😁
Go for it 💗

Hypofantasia is, occasionally, frustrating

I remember there was a bara artist who said "I don't draw women, I simply do not know how, I'm sorry."
Here's one of more recent commissions from him.
Genuinely awesome that he learned and started drawing women.
