Ads and direct monetization of comments on posts was the killer.
If this site avoids both it should be good to go.
Just put up subscriptions for advanced features hopefully they would be able to build a business just doing that.
I both agree and disagree. If someone is an influencer and makes money from social media but uses their influence as a force for good (I’m definitely NOT talking about MrBeast) I can accept that but if someone makes money on social media just to grift… they’re a piece of shit.
😬 "social" media was started by corporations specifically to make money, it was never anything else. capitalism crystallizes over time, populations grow, and algorithms reinforce the echo chamber, reward conflict
this was the case from day-one, more and more people are pissing in the pool is all ;)
lol maybe that's why bluesky is so nice! there's not rly any bluesky grifters that i've seen (maybe ive been lucky) but everyone on here seems genuine/here for a laugh
I see this skeet is tracking well, congratulations! My team has done research and think you're a perfect fit for our platform RuinSoon which connects Bluesky creators with unique marketing opportunities and
When it became less about sharing pictures of your lunch or the party from last night, and more about your “brand”, making something your entire personality, or telling everyone how hard you hustle, that was the downfall.
I lost count of the number of “self help gurus” who would basically just call you a failure and tell you the only way to succeed is hustling 247. Like no, enough of that noise!
Like there I am, enjoying my morning coffee, scrolling through my feeds (really need to stop doing that!) and oh, lovely, JohnnyRichpants198 is here to tell me you're a failure if you're not worth net $5m by the age of 30 😂
I miss the days of grainy sunsets and filtered lunch photos and pixelated photos of kids and families where it was just a way to see what folks were up to til ya saw them again.
I think he means — there used to free stuff. Free games, things you didn't need to sign up for, didn't need to have an email or subscription too. We just used the products of the internet & it was just fun. Now, everything single things is subscription based. 🤷🏾♂️
I know, right? I just come here to read and make an occasional comment. I understand some people make money off social media, but what's with shaming people who don't have big following numbers? Most of us aren't here for that.
Agreed, it turned into click bait, rage bait, shitposting, all for likes & clicks. Most of SM became miserable, hopefully BlueSky doesn't go this route. Or I'll be back on Pinterest. 😊
High rent, expensive groceries, unaffordable medications, homes, cars, even low salaries are the result of someone's earnest effort to make money out of it.
Such is the program.
Social Media was never "social", the fact it's on the internet and completely anonymous pretty much takes "social" out of the mix.
With no chance of getting your nose broke or kicked in the nuts, social norms go out the window.
It was very social in the time of forums and p2p networks. I met real friends across the sea & still fast friends with a lot of them (even early fb with the games), 20 years later.
We had this ancient cultural thing, called moderators. And everybody knew everybody after a week, you'd better behave.
I clearly remember when it went to shit overnight :
A when fb started to monetise & introduced an arbitrary algorithm
B when twitter arrived and started a cult for celebrities. Everybody wanted to become one and go viral. Everything went, just to be better than your acquaintances.
I don't know, I seem to remember it could get ugly in those forums.
I'll stick with the it was never social, but I guess it may have been different for others
That's probably true for communities in general. Social bonds are a kind of abstract currency. If I have money I don't need social bonds to get what I need from society and I can become untethered from it. When too many become untethered with no other reasons to stay the community will collapse.
See I don’t see people profiting off the internet as a bad thing. Ever since I found a video of a single mother discussing how TikTok helped her get out of an abusive marriage, I will never judge people for utilizing socials for profit again. It can do good! Just stop giving views/$$ to bad people
Amen, brother. I remember YouTube in the beginning. Grainy, shitty videos that real people made and others thought were cool. Other weirdos telling you your shitty videos were awesome. Social. Now kids want to get rich playing video games in their basement and yelling slurs at each other.

I’m not following your logic here.
I have been on the Internet since 1992.
It’s always been about money.
I had so high hopes for X, then we got X-Twitter and it ended up being the new Truth Social.

Money equals speech
That why Elon bought Twitter
