That's actually something I worry about a lot. Should we reach a point where we Europeans stand on our own feet in defence independent of America, what and who is to prevent us one day from say... deciding Africa is now "our sphere of influence". At the same time, if we decide, when such a time comes, to deepen diplomatic and economic ties with global democracies, comparisons with colonialism will be unavoidable. (Even if that isn't our goal) I'm worried that would hamper efforts to help other democracies.

There isn't really any way to stop it if it goes down that road. It's one of the reasons Western Europe re-militarizing has been such an... iffy subject with many historians, geopoliticians, analysts etc.

I'm fairly confident Europe would become fairly imperialist if united, in similar sense that US is.

One of the drivers of the end of American isolationism was they were fed up of European empires squabbling over how to divide up the world.

It probably won't be Europe first into the gap as America rolls back it's global responsibilities but it'll have to slot in somewhere.

We may be a people who conquered and enslaved, but only after having been conquered and enslaved.

Spain still has a very keen memory of the Moorish conquest, and before that the Visigoths and Romans.

No one wants to go back to aggression, but it is only fair to recognize ALL aggressors.
