Quite contrary, it was about how Russia can expand its influence there. If Russia did not support Assad, the regime would be quickly replaced by another, less corrupt secular government. Russia's involvement prevented the reorganisation of the system and led to the radicalisation of the opposition.

I'll be judging the outcome by what will befall the armenian population there. So far every friend or acquaintance of mine that has family members there is worried sick. For them every sunni islamist group is no different from isis. I know it's a shallow approach, but it is what it is. We'll see.
