One thing to note is that the Soviet policy of pitting ethnic groups against each other was practiced by colonial powers the world over, for the same reasons and with the same outcome.

Thanks. German NL here, and i want to say you did an excellent job of blasting the failures of the Kohl government without retelling everything in a divisive ppl vs ppl framing. I remember that time well. Yes Germany has uniquely botched its unification and that makes it weak and unreliable now.

This somewhat made clear to me why most of the polish minority here are essentially "ruski mir". One thing I could add is that tensions in the 00's and early 10's were exacerbated by a political party that claimed to represent Poles, they were intentionally pitting people against each other...

... Manufactured a lot of issues. They had a backing and financing from Poland even after merging with russian minority party, however after 2014-15 events mainland Poland realised that they mostly represent vatniks.

And now a month ago a Ukrainian couple moved to the building I'm living in and I already have a good relationship with them, so shared this family story and weird parths it is leading to. In a way my family returned to living with Ukrainians side by side as we have done for centuries. /x

Much like Ukrainians and Belarusians as well as Lithuanians were threatened for decades (and often still are by RUS propaganda) that 'Poles will come back and take everything from you'. Giedroyć's doctrine was a part of liberation - destroying this blackmail in the east. /5

Now all live in western Poland, which was Germany for several centuries, which is quite common in these lands i.e. people from the east were moved to the west creating new 'borderland', but this time with Germany and for decades were threatened that 'Germans will take it back'. /4

During ethnic conflicts people often have to chose a side and are seen as enemies by even their distant relatives. In this case part of my family in Ukraine experienced Red Terror in 1917-20 and ethnic cleansings during WW2 because of their Polish identity and seeked refuge in Poland. /3

In both cases at least a 150 ago they polonised. Nationality is a matter of identity and that can be chosen, which is quite frequent in case of Poland, especially in that region of mixed population,so for example one part of family fought in XIX c uprisings while other still identified as Belarusian

I can add a thing or two because my family is from Belarus and Ukraine. In both cases living there for centuries, part still lives there so I have distant cousins in Ukraine (Kyiv) and Belarus ( including a general in Lukashenko's armed forces).
