I was just diagnosed with skin cancer earlier today and as a Canadian (Vancouver, BC) I am amazed and impressed at the speed and quality of the care I’ve been receiving. Part of that is living in a major city with easy access to services, but everyone has been so kind, too!

I'm Canadian and I watch American dermatology and podiatry TV shows. I see that Canada could not have such TV shows, because no one in Canada would have to wait so long to be treated, to the point of having huge weird bumps or extreme & bizarre foot issues.
I'm so glad to have universal healthcare.

My 87 yr old mother just spent a few days in hospital with a flare up from her COPD. The care she received was very good. They made her comfortable and were quick when she needed anything. Within 48 hours she had a visit from community care to arrange home visits and was up walking with PT.

I was hit by a drunk driver so ALL of my rehab had to go through auto insurance for approval. I had catastrophic injuries (spinal, pelvic, orthopaedic injuries, severe brain injury) and had every rehab therapy declined at one point or another by a non medical person in an office

I had to relearn to sit, stand, walk, read, write, speak, feed myself, wash myself, do my hair,…..
I was accused multiple times of committing fraud even though every doctor I saw couldn’t believe my progress based on my injuries
Private healthcare is a nightmare I wouldn’t wish on anyone

I am so sorry. Yes, in America they will bankrupt you. Hospitals sue patients over unpaid bills. People ask patients for their insurance cards before being seen in the ER, which is illegal under EMTALA.

The one thing I make sure I tell
my fellow Canadians is that my bill for 9 days in the ICU (7 in a coma) and 4 more weeks in the hospital was $0
The problems started once I left the hospital and had to deal with private (auto) insurance for rehab
I also make sure Canadian doctors understand

Jae, I hear you. As a neuro-rehab social worker I had to deal with those same insurance companies from the service provider side. Treatment plans denied, clients sent for IE's on every treatment plan. Pure harassment. I retired after 23 years, totally burned out. Wishing you well.

A long time ago I saw a specialist on their 1st day after coming up from the US. She handed me a lab requisition that had so many checkmarks that I gasped & made a joke about leaving me some blood.

It's pretty sad when a visit to the doctor can mean a bill you can't pay, more stress caused by the lack of social safety nets, and worry over an illness pushing them into bankruptcy. Canadians must stand up for health care. We don't want to be put into the same situation as many Americans.
