What’s even the point of the hearings anymore, if all the nominees have to do is say “no, that indefensible thing I definitely said multiple times is not what I actually think” and then a majority votes for them?

Same as what the confirmation process for Supreme Court justices has morphed into. Trump's 3 appointees flat out lied during their job interviews (for lifetime positions with zero oversight/accountability as we found out.) "We revere settled law!" Weeks later "let's destroy a 50 year settled law."
This is my particular bugaboo, but they didn’t lie. They offered pablum that was comforting to people who chose to be comforted by it. “It is settled law” doesn’t mean “We’re not going to overturn it.”
