I opted for an Android based e-reader that I could put all my library and reading apps on for free content. Hoopla and Libby are my main apps. Look for a comparison chart of device/ app compatibility. I got a Boox color e-reader, but there are other brands at better prices.

Holy hell I thought my 17 week wait was extreme

My local library doesn’t do Hoopla anymore but my STATE library does and they’ll give a card to any resident, instantly

I use my iPad as my e reader and use blue light lens, this helped with eye fatigue and headaches during long reads

If you already own a Kindle (I do), it doesn't make much sense to me to get rid of a perfectly functioning device. There's a piece of open source software called Calibre that makes it really easy to put ebooks from anywhere onto a Kindle, if you want to avoid the Kindle store.

So, I've had a poke around to see how this might work for you, and it's not looking ideal. I tend to get books that are public domain, in bundles (from Humble for example) or through 'unofficial channels' if you know what I mean. It looks like the ebook retailers that are comparable to the Kindle...

...Store use a form of anti-piracy lock that means the ebook files won't work on a Kindle. It's possible to remove the lock using a Calibre plugin, but that's getting into more technical territory which it sounds like might be beyond your comfort level. :/

Ultimately it depends on how you use your Kindle. If you want to be able to get very specific books, and only legally, then it looks like it's going to be tougher to keep using your Kindle than I thought, I'm afraid.

If you go onto your Amazon account, you should be able to find an email address to send documents to your Kindle. You can buy ePubs from more ethical companies and still read them on your Kindle :)

https://Bookshop.org just announced they are offering e-books - so far they have about 1 million titles, but they promised to add more indie and self published stuff in the future. Some publishing houses also sell ePubs directly from their websites (Milkweed, Verso, etc.)

Most of them will have DRM though, so it won't be possible to easily download them and put them on a Kindle unfortunately.

Yes I do that! Sometimes I just want to own it and don’t want to wait for the library book to come available!
