Yes, that store manager died, in what the press referred to at the time as "possibly by crossfire" between suspect and police. The really crazy detail was that the guy shot his grandmother 7 times, and she was described as "critically wounded".

As God as my witness, Mr. MacT, I was in Trader Joe’s when the story broke that day. I walked out to my car and my phone went crazy. It took me about 45 whole damn minutes to figure out what the hell was actually happening.
