People vote the populist in in a fair election. The populist spreads propaganda and makes it difficult for anyone but them to govern. When the people finally realize they've been conned, there's no way to oust the tyrant. When you get to this point, it's too late—the damage has been done.

America has no muscle memory for this kind of mass protest... the last time we had this kind of sustained, consistent protesting was during Vietnam. Hopefully, Americans, writ large, (me included!) will set aside our comfort zones to save our nation. Protests and disruptions are the only way now.
