You see how I might think achievements are a neg negative in terms of design, experience, and community? And they're a *mandatory* net negative. FUCKING. GREAT.

Fable had an achievement where you sneak up on a villager while wearing assassin gear & fart on them.
Net negative? Agreed. That said, I do like seeing the silly ones pop up unexpectedly.
I like achievements in some games as a vehicle for flavour and storytelling. Like in Dropsy, an achievement made me cry, and I have seen games use them to add to the story and mood of the game.
I definitely agree that they shouldn't be mandatory to all games though, that is indeed ridiculous
Yeah this is why I have them on Steam. It shows you a launch checklist that it says is INCOMPLETE without the achievements, I have no faith it wouldn't ding you for it but there's no way to know
I was shocked by #2 when I saw it. I forgot what game it was, but I went to the Steam Forum to try and find nice discussion of the game (always a mistake) and instead just found a bunch of people throwing their feces against the wall screaming "NO ACHIEVEMENTS NO BUY"

1. Achievements are mandatory for publishing on Xbox and PlayStation
2. Many people will not buy Steam games if they do not have achievements and shockingly I need money to live?
3. Not 100% sure on this one but pretty sure Steam deranks games without achievements

Thanks for the explanation how to disable the achievement notifications in the replies, too. I never realized you could do that.
That's dumb
Void Stranger, for example, only has a single achievement you get by completing the very first room of the game.
