You can kind of play it whenever. There are clear parallels and references but X at this point is mostly it's own thing seperate from the main trilogy. Very good game though, would absolutely recommend.

It's a Nintendo theme park sub-game collection that focuses on super cool and creative multiplayer that actually used the wiiu gamepad to its limit. Unfortunately due to the way it used the gamepad, it is impossible to port unless you take away 70% of the content
