I am not blaming Democrats for Republicans becoming fascists. I am blaming people who overused "fascist" for years for removing the power of that word and gutting it of meaning, and making it useless now that we need it.
Something I warned would happen.

Never-Trump Republicans stick to their principles, at least, but they're incapable of self-reflection. They think the GOP was great from 1980-2015 and inexplicably lurched MAGA in 2016, and then MAGA suddenly lurched fascist in 2025. They can't admit libs were always right about the GOP.

This, this, this! Has 'fascist' been thrown around? Yeah, probably, like any other descriptor, but there have been signs of fascism for awhile now and even if you didn't smell them until recently, you could at least say "oh, now I see".

I think we overused it in Romney and McCain campaigns, we were completely right about the animating spirit of the GOP then. But Romney and McCain really did not understand themselves to be fascists, and they and their staff (most of who are democrats now) genuinely deeply resented it

Yes and no. McCain and Romney were always in a space between comfort and discomfort with fascism. I don't know what the ideal label is because it's not quite as simple as "collaborator" or "enabler" but it's not not those things

How did we over use it when that's what it is. We warned people. He's mad we called it like it was. As white man, he's saying "cogole racist thieves forgive our transgressions against u. Let us fuq u over, then we MIGHT show mercy". Kinda like a rapist stabbing a victim b/c she wouldn't "cooperate"

I think there's something to be said about them not being full on fascists and merely proto-fascists but that's semantics and besides the point that this had been growing/formenting for a long time.

Trump is simply a sui generis unifier of American Conservatism that was necessary for this.
