I am skeptical of those numbers. I find it hard to believe that in 2024 the Yankees only turned a profit of $2.1 million based on revenue of $679 million and a payroll of $314 million (per Spotrac).

Big thing he’s ignoring: even if many those profitable teams plowed all their profit into baseball operations they’d still be able to afford a payroll that’s a fraction of the Yankees.

Two things can be true, though: (1) the Mariners and Orioles are cheaping out and not spending all they could while breaking even; and (2) even if they did, they could not spend what LAD/NYY do unless they want to take a loss and put in owner money (like NYM)

These two teams are perfect examples to spend more. Young, controllable talent and loaded farm systems. Backfill remaining holes via spend to compete for WS. They don’t need to spend $200m+ to contend. This is their window. Maximize it
