This was criticised by my friends as basically reinstating character classes in a supposedly class-less RPG. Ok, but if so, far more imaginative than "fighter", "magic-user", "cleric" etc. The titular cults are brought to life by the Travels of Biturian Varosh, a narrative that runs throughout.

Biturian, a trader, recalls his travels and his encounters with each of the cults in turn. It's well-written, it illustrates loads of other interesting aspects of the setting, and most importantly: it makes clear that not everything that happens in the world is covered by the rules.

The listeners to the Ludonarrative Dissidents podcast had this on their shortlist to feature in an episode (it didn't make the cut). I'm far from sure whether people who have largely "moved on" from OSR RPGs today would still find value in this book. But I think it remains a stone cold classic.
