Margaret Wise Brown wrote a lot of children's books but this is definitely my favorite. I think there's something about saying "Goodnight" to everything that settles the soul.

It soothes MY soul to read it to my grandbabies. Like a prayer: “In the great green room, there was a telephone and a red balloon, and a picture of, the cow jumping over the moon…”
When we get to the goodnights, we add family members, “goodnight Amma, goodnight poppa, goodnight Mason…”

We might’ve read four books before it was time to sleep but this always had to be the last one. I think the repetition of rhythmic verse is part of it too. I always read it very softly and slooowly.

I gifted my daughter the book when she had her first little one. They’re (2) teens now and she’s a children’s picture book author now. And this is still a beloved book for her.
