Esp. Germans have no threat perception. My lads from e.g. Indonesia tell me how awesome it is to just go out after dark w/o feeling unsafe. Unthinkable back home. Struck me.

Even after pondering I still fear more about economy and pension than war or democracy. It just feels so darn improbable.

People aren’t worried, because their political leaders refuse to acknowledge the threat. They pretend it’s just some territorial quarrel between two neighbors far away because it allows them to avoid talking responsibility for unpopular decisions, like significantly increasing defense budgets.

Many decision makers don't understand enough, especially of the tech, to make accurate calls on cyber & defense. And they don't want to look stupid asking or risk failing on first move. Politicians aren't rewarded for taking risks, or Macron would be unchallenged.
