This is not about these candidates specifically* but a general point: I just really like that Germans value perceived competence so much higher than sympathy. “Do I like the guy? No. Do I think he can do it and will thus vote for him? Yes.”

For all the political guff, they expected two things of him:
- competence in governance
- not being a Tory
Maybe if achieves those two things, people can start to hope for even better things.

But apart from that I fully agree: Valueing competence over sympathy is generally a positive thing when we’re talking about politicians.
What I liked about her? She was always the best-prepared person at the summit, and it showed
