I have made an overly complicated chart
I made so, so many iterations and organizations and formats of this chart to try and get it to include all the info I wanted, lol
I'm only even using it as an example to illustrate a point in an article, but once I sank my teeth in I had to do it right...

Note : You can Crouch (and Lean~) in Goldeneye64
Im curious how you'd define halflife's loadout as limited. unless that tag was intended for Halo?
obviously this tree could go on forever but I like seeing the major milestones here
Could you pick up all weapons at once in that game?
you just continue to accrue weapons until the game is over
I never got into halo but if I recall you can hold like 2 weapons at a time (or some such limit)
The idea is that Chief physically doesn't have room for more.
I'm no expert in FPSs, but I do recall having been impressed by Duke Nukem 3D in its time, between creative weapon mechanics and it's handling of maps - I wonder if in the grand scheme of things it warrants a note, at least.
But even that will have strong console/pc divide once the latter half of the 90s hit
More iterations shall be necessary
It’s missing whole realms of stuff, like, say, level design or competitive modal design. It’s not at all comprehensive
It’s for an piece about how people reach consensus on genre definitions
Aside from that I do like the graphic and its purpose.
I wasn’t trying to identify definitive firsts and lasts overall, partially because we get into “you can’t prove a negative” territories.
It’s definitely true that FPSs were heavily influenced at various points by first-person dungeon crawlers and immersive sims
i’m pretty sure one of the marathons had co-op multiplayer. could be something that was added later along the line but i’d wager it was a precursor to halo.
That could throw a wrench in things but only IF we decide it counts as an FPS
I’m not sure if that’s a debate I’m equipped to have xD
(Partially because I’ve never played it hahah)
