"School choice" - which isn't really YOUR choice - it's the choice of the moneybags who start charter schools. In my neighborhood (Powderhorn) the parade of yellow school buses is endless. The amount spent on school transit is insane - and causes a LOT of pollution

I would add: decades of transportation planners enabling car dependency, lack of all ages and abilities cycling infrastructure around schools, more school options specializing in specific learning disabilities, suburban sprawl, and lack of convenient or reliable bussing options.

The rise of comment sections and FB community groups, where the need for kids' constant supervision was reinforced. Something happened to your kids walking by themselves= parent shaming, "what were they thinking??" Something happened to a kid in a car=tragic accident, "nothing they could have done"

You will hear all kinds of complaints about Mpls' "CDD" but one thing it did was bring all magnet programs between Lake and Broadway. We picked the DT Spanish immersion school for our K kid, which had previously been located down near highway 62.

Gradual moving of schools out of denser area so they can have playing fields etc… consolidation into larger schools for staffing efficiency need larger lots… then magnets and school choice.
