I love that idea. Nine years ago I could see the Milky Way. Then Republicans built homes for 30,000 more people and now I can barely see the Big Dipper.
I love that idea! Celestial events are really the only times there have been impromptu gatherings of neighbors on my street. I think this could catch on.
I did this in Nevada hours from any light pollution. Pulled over to the side of the 2 lane highway and laid down on the hood of the car and just sat in awe of the milky way for a long time.
This is one thing I really love about snowstorms/ice storms in the south…the power grid can’t handle it and it is often perfectly dark where I live for a day or two.
That's a great idea. San Jose used to use low-pressure sodium lights to benefit Lick Observatory. When they replaced them with LED they claimed they could turn them off for big astronomical events. Never happened
In UK a large and growing percentage of street lights have been changed to darksky friendly lights. Properly shaded to only point down, plus they are dimmed in late evening and then switched off completely post midnight (apart from safety critical areas)

I’ve been considering getting a hotel down there for a night, maybe checking out the Sand Dunes in the daytime! I’m excited there’s a dark sky location a couple hours away!
I would much, much rather see sky-friendly lighting solutions installed everywhere instead. One night to really see the stars is nice, but being able to see them every night would be so much better. 🥰
But in the meanwhile, a celebration of dark skies once a year would be appealing.
We had Cyclone Marcia here in Central Queensland in 2015. I was living in Rockhampton, and the power was down for a week. It was sweltering hot day and night, and the atmosphere was a vacume so I sat outside....and looked up. The sky was a mass of stars I'd never seen before......
Where there had been only darkness before, there was a glittering mass of stars from horizon to horizon. I was transfixed for hours each night the power was down. I heard people complaining about the power being down for so long. but I said "Did you look up?" So many hadn't. I will never forget it!

Do we not have better tech that can use less energy to provide the same amount of of light at ground level?

My parents used to own it.
