Fascinating picture. The far side of the Moon is also so strangely unfamiliar compared to the one that we see from Earth, with almost no "seas" just craters.
In part, that is because DSCOVR's EPIC camera takes separate frames filtered for various wavelengths. It's centered on Earth, and the Moon moves between each frame. When the red, green and blue frames are combined, the moon doesn't quite align in each frame, and so we get this "bad photoshop" look.
Haha man that is so weird looking, especially given that we never get to see that side from here on Earth. SO, the burning question, is that any way near to scale for size to size, Luna vs. Earth? Or is it not far enough away to grant that kind of visual accuracy? Kinda think it isn't.
It's 100% real, and it wasn't taken from the surface of the moon... it was taken from earth's L1 point... about a million miles directly towards the sun.
ok seeing that storm of the coast of baja on the image i was curious, sooo i asked the dreaded copilot AI if it had a name, it told me it was tropical storm Ileana, is that correct i thought that image had been around longer, ill have to check
Also, DSCOVR's EPIC camera takes separate frames filtered for various wavelengths. It's centered on Earth, and the Moon moves between each frame. When the R, G and B frames are combined, the moon doesn't align perfectly in each frame, and so we get this slightly wrong look, and a green fringe.
Yep! I first shared this photo to my facebook page almost a decade ago and was met with a handful of people telling me it was fake even though I linked to the NASA page. 😂
I retweeted it a few times on twitter and got similar responses. It just looks so strange.
Good description! Though plenty of people will assume it's fake *because* it's from NASA 🙂
Another comment I see is "it must be fake, because if the earth was fully illuminated, the moon must be also"... and of course, the moon is indeed fully illuminated, it's just a lot darker than the earth.
