To be honest, I'm kind of glad that they were largely conservative with it. The whole "why isn't this a fully rewritten remake?!?" reactions I've seen from some quarters is unsettling.

We just want Suikodens we can play on modem machines with minor QoL. It doesn't need to be Rebirth.

I really hope (and I think Konami's hoping, too), that this is the case here with Suikoden. It's so ready for a revival, but getting new players on board and up to speed is vital if we're going to forge ahead to Suikoden VI eventually.

I can't remember if you also wrote up DQ III HD-2D Remake, but I'm fascinated in that imbalance; I found (for DQ) that for all the shiny glow-up and the QoL to combat speed and quest markers (for those so inclined), it was also too enamored with "classic" DQ when the series has come so far since.

It’s something I’d have to think on a bit more, but off the cuff, I think it worked better for me in DQ3 because the preserved old school elements felt structural, and were frictionless to move through because of the improved UI and added QoL stuff. A lot of what remains in Suikoden is just bad UI.
