Texas queer here. Gave this a read bc I’m a fan of Isbell’s lyrics, and it did not disappoint. Your voice and style of writing is so cool, like we’re just shooting the shit across a dive bar bench. I used to hate Decoration Day, but you reframed it so well. It’s a hard listen but a damn good song.

I never knew DD was about a real blood feud, let alone that he wrote it from the other family’s point of view. The nuances of the South are damn near endless, and you’ve highlighted them in an incredible way. I think it’s about time I checked out Jackass.

absolutely! i totally related to your breakdown of the beauty in dirtbag culture.
i grew up in philly with a ton of boys who loved to punch each other in the junk and get hurt on shopping carts so seeing the cky tapes and later jackass really validated our goonery
