That so baffles me when breweries choose not to cooperate. What is the thought process? "Ah, yes, Protz, he will try to destroy our decades of reputation as a great brewer because he is well-known for hating good beer. Ha ha, we will say NO!"

A really good read. It was Sam Smith's that got me into real ale in the first place, so I have a special interest. When Samuel takes over from Humphrey there are bound to be changes. Will he repair the damage done by his father or sell out to the multinationals, I wonder.

Thanks for posting this fascinating article. I've never liked their pubs and I think their beer is bang average. Years ago. Ye Olde Swiss Cottage pub, which is situated on a traffic island on the Finchley Rd, was a terrible boozer. Judging by recent reviews on Trip advisor it hasn't got any better

It’s an odd business. Half the Samuel Smith pubs in York are closed at any one time. Only last month, the Wellington Arms in Alma Terrace was closed at 24 hour notice. The York Arms, just yards away from York Minster, has been closed for five year!

The Butchers Arms in Pudsey has been closed for over 3 years. A shame as there are only two other true pubs in the town centre now.

It’s a fascinating read Roger, brilliant research by the writer. We have a Sam Smiths pub-the Cheshire Midland-in my hometown of Altrincham boarded up by a railway station, a prime spot. Laid empty now for over 5 years. It’s absolute madness.
