Didn’t know anything about it when I saw it, but I had some time to kill and it was starting in 20 minutes. It became my favorite movie of the year. The audience was so into it! No talking, no one got on their phones, just everyone glued to the screen.

I think they responded most to how different it felt and that it trusted and respected them as viewers not to be as in-your-face frantic as other animated movies.

Now we just have to hope Disney doesn't figure out a way to buy it, so they can make 4 sequels, a prequel that explains everything, a live action/CGI remake, and TV show adaptations for each individual animal (where they will inevitably talk).

Kids pick up on formulaic, insincere “content”. And respond to a big message that isn’t didactic. They are used to discovering and processing new things, because so much is new to them.

The choice of animal characters was fascinating, and each made great AND selfish/terrible choices along the way. The kids enjoyed trying to figure out the setting, time, and circumstances.
