Most vehicles (not all, but most) have steel "armor" (otherwise known as the body). Those vehicles are carbon steel with primer and paint. Stainless has an oxide layer that protects it against rust. But for impact resistance, carbon steel is tougher than stainless steel. Either is just sheet metal.
