The genderfluid doesn't come from where he got it, it comes from how he adapts/adjusts to it. "Genderfluid man" seems like a pretty accurate descriptor for how Ranma ends up.

Every scheme of Ranma's involves them deciding to be girl mode to either trick people or get his way in other ways.

There's no cis explanation for why they're so happy being girl mode.

it's the Anything Goes School of Martial Arts. It's an advantage in the right situation but other than it getting those crazy women off his back for awhile it just never read to me like "yeah I definitely like being a girl more".

Never said he liked being a girl more. That wouldn't really be "genderfluid man". By the end of the manga he generally prefers being a man with a male body, but he's perfectly comfortable being a girl sometimes. Early on in the manga it's something he tolerates for a tactical advantage.

There was a huge four-part deep dive into the manga a few years ago to show how, yeah, Ranma is absolutely genderfluid *canonically*--just, Takahashi didn't know that genderfluidity was a thing when she wrote the manga, and did it by accident.

And yeah, 1980s understanding of gender was pretty much you're either born into the body you have and happy with it, you're a crossdresser, or you're "a woman/man trapped in a man's/woman's body". Those were the understood options.

Ranma physically changes back and forth all the time and goes with he/him when male and she/her when female. For all that he identifies *primarily* as male, I dunno that there's a more accurate description than genderfluid.

"Genderfluid guy" seems like an accurate descriptor for that. He defaults to male but sometimes he becomes a woman on purpose.
