Y'all. The gall. The absolute unmitigated gall. Cab paper setting out the principles of responsible regulation to be included in the reg standards Bill. Here's the very first one. This paper is released *as the government Seymour is a minister in* is in the process of breaking it.

Just asked Minister in charge of terrible bill to cut women’s pay if she agreed with this statement about rule of law equating to not making retrospective law (quoting from above) and no answer. Yet the retrospective law she is in charge of is progressing 🤯

What's extremely frustrating, as shown in the proactively released documents, is that the papers contain a *genuinely pretty solid* proposal to improve regulatory quality, & some great suggests for tweaks from agencies like the clerk's office.

The Minister personally decided to do his Bill instead.

Basically everyone who has knowledge in the area, including Min of Regulation staff, suggested a more hands off approach, tweaking the rule in the House and using existing measures in the Legislation Act to achieve better regs. The proposed bill was found less effective by all relevant experts.

The Minister disregarded pretty unequivocal, well-reasoned advice, (not ideological whining from lazy officials which he's portrayed it as in his media comment), for a Bill drafted at its core by a collection of his ideological friends in the NGO sector. Gotta say, pretty poor regulatory practice.

Kudos on this single point: the documents ARE all out there. Very quickly proactively released. So you can see that this is very clearly a captain's call based purely on ideology and against the evidence & expert advice presented to him. He owns that, & so do his coalition partners in National.

I also feel like it's worth noting this isn't anything but me summarising what the publicly released documents say & noting the nature of the retrospective legislation currently before the house. There is no editorial comment here. These are admitted facts. Someone should ask the PM what he thinks.
