My parents were amateur ornithologists, doing counts and banning birds. I was the note-taker on numerous counts as a kid for newcomers to the Christmas Count. Good times, great memories.

My bird count was super low this year - we had 35-40 mile per hour winds and the little cuties were hunkered down 😞 I’m going to do another count next weekend to see how many of our typical Winter birds are still around. I think we have many more Pine Siskins and less of several other species.

Big joy is we have piliated woodpeckers, love their noises, sounds like old time Tarzan movies. Cardinals, tit mice, wrens nests in weird places,
Robins couple of days in Jan as they head north, brown thrashers, crows, different type hawks, doves not around now. We live in the woods.

Pileated woodpeckers are a magnificent bird! We also live in a foothills region of boreal mixwood, & aspen parkland, so they are here year round. Along with Downy & Hoary woodpeckers. Robins are a first sign of spring up here, maybe the ones you saw in January!

Blue jays chickadees and Cardinals male and female. At my feeder everyday. The damn Cardinals give me a talking to if I don’t have Safflower seeds in the feeder.
