I'm glad you pointed out so forthrightly that we were talking about hundred dollar loaves of bread because my brain kept going "it's a hundred dollar loaf of bread!" yes, yes, already mentioned
It's true you can't really make the real thing at home, but for any other DIY enthusiasts/cheapskates: a nice enriched fruit bread with fiori di sicilia still comes out a lot better than the standard store kind
Thank you for the links! I ordered a pandoro (like a pannetone but without fruits) from the third bakery on that list this morning, and it's already scheduled to arrive tomorrow 👀
I fell in love with panettone living in Rome in the 90s. For the past two Christmases, I tried making it - Attempt #1 was without a mixer (not recommended)! I acquired a stand mixer in the interim, which helped Attempt #2, but this year I shall not embark upon Attempt #3.
Aaah I’m out of free articles but as an Italian panettone ENTHUSIAST I’m dying to know your top picks, I’ve tasted widely and have strong opinions especially about underdogs
My tl dr is: Fiasconaro is I deeply underrated and wildly good value (not the branded Dolce & Gabbana nonsense ones though which are 2 x or more the cost for the fancy tin and the same damn thing). Freshness is an issue with the way it stocks and ships though.
We had a really big posh one given to us in a sealed tin. Convinced I wouldn't like it, it just hung around, until one day, out of curiosity, I tried it. All gone in a day. I've also never tried stollen, but that appears to have marzipan (Satan's earwax) so probably never will.
Oh, this is FASCINATING news. When I was little, we were friends with a family whose dad was the most 1970s Italian-American guy you ever met—born in Rome, owned a furniture store in lower Manhattan, lived in Jersey. Gold chains, the whole deal.
Thus: I remember loving panettone when I was a kid.
I really enjoy panettone that I know (the bad stuff likely from the local stores) but I am so intrigued by these… if you had to pick just one to venture out on?
