Major says he rarely intervenes in modern politics, but "sometimes there are things which need to be said which cannot be said by the current government".

I think we all know what Keir thinks of trump and what he would like to say in public but at the end of this it will implode int he US and we have to be on the right side of it, it is why I have put all my pension cash I have gathered since 19 (now 52) into a cash pot ...
well the whole europe behind them bay one country and possibly slovakia ... we have the arms industries to keep them supplied but bet part of the threat is to stop using the F-35's they have ... but in all the chatter I have seen, it is like europe is doomed when I see us as united
Agreeing with a former Conservative PM isn’t a usual position for me. Demonstrates just how far politics/Tory party have moved to the right when John Major is a breath of fresh air!
I'm not going to claim Major was anything other than an orthodox conservative at the time but if he was in the current cabinet he wouldn't be the most right wing
As a Brixton boy who left school at 16, which informed his politics, he wouldn't get anywhere in the modern Tory party
No point. Even Bush Jr wouldn't get air time on a MAGA channel and the Trumpists just put anything a former Dem incumbent has to say as Communist lies. USania has gone past the point of no return and we're all going to regret it.
If the United States is no longer our ally, then European nations have to get serious about economic growth - not just say we want it while driving ourselves further into stagnation with more debt, more regulations, and poorly targeted taxes.
Not historically a fan of Major but he’s spot on here. It’s really quite scary, but easy to understand given our right wing media that lots of Trumps apologists in the UK don’t receive the scrutiny they deserve. FFS the BBC have spent days on Reeves’ CV, but don’t remember similar for Farage et al.
Why is everyone scared of China? They have done well documented human rights abuses on their own citizens but what threats have they made to the world (except Taiwan). Growing up with cold war/iron curtain but know very little about China except they're very efficient and good at making electronics.
Good question. I think it’s because China does what it needs to do for its own advancement and survival regardless of human cost. And with climate change threatening sea level rises, water and food systems, that’s a potential problem.
They all eventually become like the USA… corrupt, self serving, ignorant and arrogant. All of them. Then they collapse. Look it up. It happens to every super power.
I get that. And hopefully USA have voted for their own collapse. But the collaboration with Russia is existential, whereas stuff about China seems to be about trade, which isn't immediately scary like being in a war.
Right now, China is less of a threat than the US, if you can believe that. China is still a threat to world peace… Sea of Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, the persecuting of minority groups mostly cultural and religious…. And yet, this doesn’t scare me nearly as much as the recklessness of the US.
Yes that's exactly how I feel. They seem to persecute their own and not us. Which is wrong, but the threat from USA/Russia is immediate.
It's always USA that tell us we should fear China with no real reasons that they explain.
Do you think that people in Hong Kong, South Korea & Taiwan are, well, people? Do you think they should be able to chat to a friend without worrying it will land them in gaol? Do you think that they should be able to go to church without worrying it will them sacked? Do you think football games 1/3
should be won by the best team or the biggest bribe? Those places were all free societies in 2000. But the Chinese Communist Party threatens those freedoms. In HK, they've gone, and so have tens of thousands of British HKers, who left their hometown to keep their freedom by living in the UK. 2/3
Taiwan could be next. And every phone, every tablet, every car, uses chips made in Taiwan and Korea. Right now, that's a big problem for Russia, because it has made enemies of these free countries, and it's lost their tech. If China controls them, then it becomes a big problem for us. 3/3
tl;dr: Britain is a free country and we need to stick together with other free countries, both for the sake of their people and because we are stronger together.
Aren't all these things happening to people in China though; they're not threatening us?
My original post mentioned the human rights abuses. They are well documented.
Read the whole thread for the argument.
But on that point: they are also people, then they should have the same basic rights as us.
If you think they shouldn't have the same basic rights, then you are implying that they are not really people, that you think they are second class compared to Brits.
Check this channel out, sober, well researched analysis of whats happening with China, by a western guy who lives thier, watch his videos they are accurate, up to date and will give you a very clear understanding of the impact of China globally and its intentions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivdsyNvFq_8&ab_channel=InsideChinaBusiness
Your welcome, its hard to find calm grounded news amongst the plethora of overblown click bait headline driven "analysis" channels that take 30/40 minutes to say what can be said in 5-10 without half the hysterical claims you see, as soon as I see "shock" "bombshell" etc, in the headline etc I avoid
Have a look at everyday items around you. What proportion were _not_ made in China? Also, China is pursuing a form of mercantilist colonialism and actively targets any form of opposition, anywhere. They have been caught opening illegal Police stations in Europe.
But that's because they are good at making stuff and selling it really cheaply (cf aforementioned human rights abuses).
We can choose not to buy that. That doesn't sound scary like having a nuke pointed at you.
Trump wants Europe to swing Far Right and dance to his tune.
Putin wants to expand into Europe.
These are real existential threats now.
It sounds like we should treat China, who aren't threatening anything, as a trading/business partner; we don't have to be bezzie mates to do that.

The threat from Russia/USA is a definite.
My original post mentioned the human rights abuses. They are well documented.
How does it answer mine?

My original post acknowledged their own atrocious human rights record and their threats to Taiwan.
But my question was simply: what threat do they pose to us in the UK, and why are they always spoken about as a threat?
Thank you for your time 😊
