My caution is around who develops software for qual without a deep understanding of qual - and there’s good critique of the way tech of all type subtly shapes analysis. But I’ll watch and see…

I have not! I think quokka could easily be adapted for qualitative content analysis, using stringr for finding matching strings in the corpus; perhaps something for the future if there is demand (or someone else creates a derivative!).

The app is hosted on my lab website at https://palm-lab.github.io/QualCA for anyone to use. It is in early development, so all feedback is appreciated – such as any bugs or feature requests (including those from other qualitative analysis software that require expensive subscription licenses).

The code (R Shiny with snippets of JS) is hosted on my lab's Github: https://github.com/PALM-Lab/QualCA-code if anyone prefers to use it locally (which has the advantage of real-time backing up!). I am releasing the app open-source (and I do not plan on adding any AI functionalities to the app either.)

This might be a surprise to some – I'm not a qualitative methods researcher; I'm a cognitive neuroscientist of visual attention and memory! For those who know me that way, I still am a psychophysicist / computational modeller / neuroimaging researcher; I haven't gone completely rogue.

But I do advocate for open scholarship, and have been calling myself a (methods) pluralist. I was inspired by my new colleagues to learn more about qualitative methods; and that's how I learnt of the clunky, expensive qualitative analysis software out there. I felt there had to be a better way.

So, I thought I would try to build an alternative, and that's how quokka came about. We've been using quokka for a qualitative project (one I think will be a useful piece on why research on visual attention and memory is needed) that has guided the app's development! But that's only one use so far.
